Following apprenticeship in 1994 with renowned Master Chef George Karousos he fulfilled his love for travel and study staring in Vail Colorado at the Sonnenalp Resort, he followed a path from a friend there to visit that man’s country of Nepal. After long stints involving work and study in the Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area he further developed his business skills under Chef Albert Bouchard of Restaurant Bouchard, here in Newport.
Phil follows the dictum, "we work well together, we live well together", an attitude of genuine congeniality that owners, Rory and Ric Ranucci, recognize as an attitude that makes Artful Lodger guests feel welcome and special. His daily goal, along with staff, April, Megan, Natalie, the aunts and Ezra, is to keep the inn fresh, the full breakfasts, exquistie in taste and presentation, in an ambiance of Victorian Newport.
The building has been a Bed & Breakfast since 1992. The year 2017 marked the 25th anniversary of The Artful Lodger Inn and corresponded to the 205th anniversary of our “literary patron saint” Charles Dickens. The original owners (now retired) Ric & Rory Ranucci, both performing musicians, acquired the Inn in 1992, they embarked upon the project that continues to this day.
